Can someone please explain the idea of issued/authorized shares?

If there are over 100 million issued shares right now how does that translate into what the company is worth, etc.? Everybody keeps guessing at what the stock may rise to like $1-5 a share. If the stock was $5 a share does that mean the company is worth 500 million?? That of course seems impossible. I guess I am asking "How do outstanding shares play into the big picture?".
And "What are the limitations on a stock with so many shares available for purchase?".

Thanks in advance.
