Offshore wind energy – Targets, not realistic. The expansion calls for $27 billion in investment by 2026
10:56 - 08/18/2023

Government targets to increase global wind power installations by five times a year by 2030 are unrealistic and would require $27 billion in supply chain investment by 2026, according to a recent report published by Wood Mackenzie.

The research and consulting firm predicts that annual capacity is more likely to grow by 30 gigawatts a year by 2030, well below the target of 80 GW a year, or a fivefold increase, set by governments around the world.

"The supply chain is struggling to grow and will be an obstacle to achieving decarbonisation targets if change does not happen," the research firm stated.

Close to 80 GW of annual installations to meet all government targets is not a realistic figure, and even the projected achievement of an additional 30 GW will be unrealistic unless there is immediate investment in the supply chain.

$27 billion in new investment in the supply chain is needed by 2026 and $100 billion in investment by 2030 for the sector to be able to meet the government's targets of fivefold annual installation growth by the end of the decade, it said. report.

Wood Mackenzie noted that low profit margins in offshore wind power generation and uncertainty around project timelines resulting in widely varying supply chain needs are making it difficult to garner investment in the sector. .

According to the World Energy Statistical Review report in June, global wind and solar power grew to a record 12% of power generation last year, surpassing nuclear.

Target-setting and plans for energy market infrastructure to support offshore wind power generation need to extend beyond 2030 to grow the supply chain, according to Wood Mackenzie analysts.
