Leaked document fans Pemex CEO exit rumors
Officials of Mexico’s federal oil company, Pemex, have denied the authenticity of a leaked document in which President Andrés Manuel López Obrador orders the replacement of CEO Octavio Romero Oropeza.

According to the document, the leader of union STPRM, Sergio Ayala Salvio, would take over. Romero is rumored to prepare a run for Tabasco governor next year on the ticket of ruling Morena party.

Officials cited by outlets such as El Economista also denied the authenticity of a video in which members of the union read the letter out loud during a meeting.

Yet, local energy news site Energía a Debate reported that anonymous sources confirmed that the Pemex administration is readying a series of financial reports and documents to complete the transfer.

Neither Pemex nor the federal government have issued an official statement on the supposed leadership change, allegedly planned for end-month.

Romero has been head of the company since the beginning of the López Obrador administration in 2018.

During this period, Pemex has experienced several scandals, including a recent series of accidents in the Campeche bay and the handling of its US$111bn debt.
