It sends a larger message that the values we grew up with are important to us. Doing nothing would do more damage than acting. No one is above consequences, so for the rule of law and the Constitution to be upheld, the obvious documented law breaking has to be prosecuted or else we have no rule of law... "the biggest bully wins" isn't what our system is based upon.
He only has 91 charges so far... but I bet he will have plenty of contempt charges before it is over so he could easily hit the century mark.
Edit: I would be remiss to not add the likelihood of perjury charges to the serial liar.
