Bezos compared the dot-com boom to the California Gold Rush of the 1800’s and said, “In a gold rush, when it’s over, it’s over,” clearly noting that gold is finite, but NOT innovation.

He then continues to compare the internet to electricity.

So, to answer your question, why is Amazon getting into satellite internet?

Bezos knows that the backbone of the Digital Age is the internet. This venture is a strategic move to control the infrastructure of the future.

Bezos understands that e-commerce will continue to change, and that Amazon’s business models will continue to evolve.

It’s impossible to control innovation, but it’s easier to control the infrastructure where innovation happens.

Technological devices will continue to change. Algorithms, artificial intelligence, computing power, everything will continue to evolve; but the transmission of data is here to stay… no matter what.

Also, providing internet access to the planet means opening the doors to four billion additional potential customers for Amazon’s businesses.

Amazon doesn’t have an easy victory on this competitive satellite internet industry.
