What would constitute a tweak, if bringing in strains of silkworms from around the world, and putting your genetic cassettes in those 11 or so strains.... to make Dragon silk? Are we now simplifying creation of 2 strain multi line hybrids, to not being called a tweak? It certainly is a tweak, and several of them.
Science requires that you exhaust all possibilities, before running with the best you got. The pilot was a very good indicator of the potential for success. If you have to, then you could also do your production "in season," or when it is favorable/optimal for producing your silk. Year round production is a/the climatic challenge, and not a small one. I think the higher temp range is our problem.
Mundane silkworms......
- Climate :
Tropical and monsoon
Minimum temperature 4oC = 39.2oF
Maximum temperature 39oC = 102.2oF
Humidity: from 84 – 100%
I am 100% sure our silkworms have a smaller range in temperature tolerance. KBLB knows what temp tolerances they are looking to achieve, but we don't. So the science needs to be developed, and having 11(?) strains and learning what strain(s) gives the best temperature range is important. They should be getting close to finding the best 2 multi line strains they are going to run with, as it is now the 3rd quarter. After that Prodigy goes to work in getting the numbers up.
Was finding a way to combine pico cotton and Dragon Silk desperately grasping for straws? They found more than one process improvement and the best yarn configuration to make Spydasilk doable. I think they are going to be able to proceed with the best they have. They are testing all the straws, but the pilot worked without a multi strain solution. It isn't desperation, it is science.
