Israel up in arms over Swedish approval of Bible, Torah burning

Swedish police on 14 July approved a request to hold a public gathering to burn a Torah and Bible, Judaism and Christianity’s holy books, in front of the Israeli embassy.

According to Swedish media, a man in his 30s is behind the request to publicly burn the books, which will take place on 15 July outside the Israeli embassy in Stockholm.

Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Ziv Nevo Kulman, responded to the request to burn the Torah and Bible, saying, "This is clearly an act of hatred that must be stopped.”

Israel's President Isaac Herzog also said, “I unequivocally condemn the permission granted in Sweden to burn holy books. As the President of the State of Israel, I condemned the burning of the Quran, sacred to Muslims the world over, and I am now heartbroken that the same fate awaits a Jewish Bible, the eternal book of the Jewish people.”

“Permitting the defacement of sacred texts is not an exercise in freedom of expression; it is blatant incitement and an act of pure hate. The whole world must join together in clearly condemning this repulsive act.”

The request to burn the Christian and Jewish holy books follows the public burning of the Quran in Sweden last month, which sparked anger across the Islamic world and led to large protests and the storming of the Swedish embassy in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, by followers of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Rabbi Moshe David HaCohen told The National that the Jewish community in Sweden was working with the Muslim community to oppose tomorrow’s book burning.

The Quran was burned by Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old Iraqi refugee, outside Stockholm's main Mosque on the same day hundreds of millions of Muslims celebrated Eid al-Adha.

He stomped on the holy book and placed bacon -- the consumption of which is forbidden in Islam -- between the pages before lighting a few pages on fire and kicking the holy book around like a football while raising the Swedish flag.

Iran has accused Momika, an Iraqi Christian man, of being an agent for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency.

The Iranian foreign ministry claims that Momika was recruited by Israeli intelligence in 2019 and has been working with them since.

The ministry says that Momika played “a major role” in espionage activity targeting Iran-backed resistance movements in Iraq, adding that he had requested residency in Sweden in exchange for working with the Mossad.

Despite being “notorious” and holding a criminal record in his home country of Iraq, Momika was “accepted and welcomed by the Zionists.”

In January, Danish citizen Rasmus Paludan burned a translation of the Quran during a demonstration outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.
