The drop in soda consumption is among the largest changes in the American diet in the last few years. Sales of bottled water are surging ahead as this product has overtaken carbonated soda and fruit drinks, previously the largest beverage category in the US.
A large part of bottled water's growth around 44% - comes from consumers switching from carbonated soft drinks and fruit drinks to bottled water. In 2021, 15.3 billion gallons of bottled water were sold in the US as the sales grew each year for the last decade. Bottled water is now the most commonly consumed beverage among Americans, while carbonated soft drinks rank a close second.
Additional factors boosting the use of bottled water are an increase in disposable income, a rise in urban population, an improvement in standards of living, and the emergence of eco-friendly materials for bottles.
