I suppose so…

More to the point here, first, sometimes there seems to be some confusion about what we know and what we believe. It may even be that we know what someone has said, but we can only believe it to be fact.

Without making accusations, I would also note that message boards can also contain messages with alterier motives. In such case both belief and knowledge become moot. I note that sometimes we have someone posting thanks that the price of a given security has just tanked 50%, since it gives that person a chance to go to their bottomless piggy bank and load up some more. The underlying aim clearly appears to be to boost the stock price. Since on one hand that person is delighted with the fabulous opening the cheap price offers, why, on the other hand, pump the stock on a public message board? Is this contributing to knowledge? Only insofar as forming an opinion about the worth of the celebratory post is concerned. That, however, does appear to back up your theorem.

Just as an additional monkey wrench, when I come to “know” something, that bit of new knowledge seems to open up a new spate of questions. The net effect is not necessarily a reduction in the “unknown”. Rumsfeld had his own take on all this.

This is why message boards are fun.
