Nope.
It's not about fibers KBLB can necessarily produce right now. It's more to do with what they may be able to produce in the future.

I very much disagree. This has everything to do with fibers they can produce now. The grants are to help them get to the future.

The pandemic caught many countries, including the U.S., with their pants down. Component parts and raw materials for important products were being sourced from countries all over the planet, all because it was cheaper. It was a supply chain nightmare and it was embarrassing for many developed countries. This DPAI is an effort to keep that from happening ever again.

This is why this initiative cannot be lumped into Kraig Labs last effort with the Army. The Army contract was to create a fabric that could be tested for ballistics protection. The Army didn't care what country we made it in, they just wanted the fabric. We just didn't have the infrastructure at the time.

This new initiative is the DOD knowing and willing to spend money in order to on-shore component parts back to the U.S. so we aren't reliant on other countries. They know this will cost them. Imagine if one day we start uniforming our troops with spider silk that only comes from Vietnam. Now imagine what would happen if suddenly the U.S. relations with Vietnam went south? The DOD needs to spend money to secure our supply chain.

And now we only need to prove that we can make a fiber with spider silk properties. We don't need to make a fabric. Just the basic raw material. Thinking this is similar to the Army contract is myopic.
