First off...
did you graduate at age 8?? Dang you're old!
secondly, I recall as a kid figuring out that the average annual income stayed pretty much in line through the years as the price of a Cadillac or Corvette.
At the time I didn't understand why you'd buy a Cadillac if you could have a Corvette?
(just checked the numbers for 2022)

The median American worker brings home an estimated $54,132 a year.

I guess it's a bargain now!

We expect pricing to start at about $37,000, making it one of the most affordable cars in its class. The Premium Luxury and Sport trims are expected to begin at around $41,000, and the CT5-V will start at approximately $48,000.

but not the Corvette?

The pricing of the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette starts at $60,900 for the coupe and $68,400 for the convertible for the base 1LT trim.

Anyway, being in a Union was a big deal in the '60s, but typically you had a couple years as an Apprentice first.
It seems like 20 years ago, the College degree was greatly discounted in value. Now it seems a kid would rather just live with his/her parents at home vs taking a below average income starting out.

Just my opinion, of course.
