With the medical issues, I believe there's a factual core to them because why would a doctor risk their freedom and livelihood to lie so he could avoid trial?

Maybe so.
But it seems pretty likely - nay certain - that there was a malingering/exaggeration element to them as well.
He claimed he was medically unfit to travel to D.C.. Looks like the US marshalls saw it differently! Hearing in DC, in persion, Thursday of this week.
He could get committed, or bailed again on tighter restrictions. He could even face additional charges. He might even change his plea: Little to be gained from kicking the can down the road now, after all.
Its gonna be interesting!
I do like the way they granted his motion for deferral BEFORE they incarcerated him!
"Hoist by his own petard" is the expression that leaps to mind!
That should focus his mind on his fitness to stand trial a bit. Wonder if he will try and move the trial forward again? But the speedy trial clock has already been tolled. So I wouldn't blame the prosecuting counsel or Judge if they now have subsequent competing engagements to fulfill on the original dates (washing their hair, or whatever!).
I think a plea would be the smart move now.
But when has Berman ever pulled the smart move?
Maybe they will look the other way when it comes to the offences he committed while on bail if he sticks his hands up to the original charges without further contest? Otherwise, perhaps additional indictments will be served up for those new offences, so they can cycle round to have another go at him, if by some absolute miracle he somehow beats the initial rap?
That's probably how I would look to play this.
Popcorn on standby!
