That's not necessarily true.

However there is a large "gap" between Homo Ergaster and Homo Sapiens sapiens in most regions.

What is interesting however, is the Middle Awash region of Africa is like a cartoon flip book or frames of film locking in an evolutionary process that went on 6 million years... Going down layer after layer in the fossil record, you can see the changes first hand.

From Ardipithecus kadabba to Homo sapiens idaltu, the chain of evolutionary events is clear.

What is especially interesting however, is there is HUGE gap between events that went on 2.0 to 3.0 million years ago. There was very little to the fossil record of that time.
