Energy, Albania with untapped potential

The energy sector is quite large in the Western Balkans, with a significant share of GDP ranging between 3% and 6% in all economies. All economies have comparative advantages.

Furthermore, throughout the Western Balkans the sector has an "upstream" position in global value chains (exports), which is a positive feature.

The industry is supported by various government initiatives in the region and is also very important to the European Green Deal.

The region's scientific potential in the energy field is also strong, with a number of educational, scientific and research organizations that can support and improve industry competitiveness through innovation and research and development (R&D).

Finally, the economies of the Western Balkans have rich and untapped natural resources for the production of energy from renewable sources, and Albania leads in this direction.
