Your right, but you can still short stocks with bad balance sheets. Look at BBBY, once they do a R/S that is ripe for another short.

Looks like I got out of my $CVS short way too soon I was shorting in the 90's now look at it.

Point is, in this market you actually make more shorting a individual stock and not the index Options are option as well.
