Albania does not leave China's 17+1 Initiative, Rama: We have no intention, it would be a wrong idea
March 7, 2023

Albania will not leave the 17+1 initiative, initiated by China in 2012 between the countries of Eastern Central Europe and those of the Western Balkans, with the exception of Kosovo, although so far it has not benefited from any investment.

At the media conference, held today in Berlin, alongside the German Chancellor, Sholz Rama clarified Albania's position in the framework of cooperation with China

"Albania has maintained a clear public position, even calling on the countries of the region to choose an alternative for 5 G. We did this a long time ago. In this respect we have no problem. Yes, we are part of the 17+1 format and we have no intention of leaving, even though Albania is the country, out of all the other countries of this format, that has not benefited from any investment.

I don't know where you base your close cooperation with China. For the sake of truth, for historical and psychological reasons of both parties, our cooperation is completely normal and compared to other countries, it is irrelevant. But to leave the forum to take a stand for any reason seems to me a wrong idea."

For Rama, " leaving the 17+1 initiative is a wrong idea" while he sees cooperation as necessary despite opposing positions.

"In the world we live in, communication, with everyone without exception, despite the fact that we may have opposing opinions, is A." For ourselves, in Albania, we have spent a period of time with a regime that did not speak to anyone and took an attitude towards the whole planet. Communication will have to be with anyone," said Rama.
China's 17+1 initiative is viewed with concern by EU countries as it is related to China's intention to divide the EU, while experts see it as an opportunity for Beijing to use it as a gateway to European markets and return as important player.

Prime Minister Edi Rama is in Berlin as part of a two-day official visit.
