Even in the highly unlikely event that Freeport had to declare bankruptcy, it would continue to operate under bankruptcy protection since the cash inflows would be beneficial to all concerned. They'd just have to restructure their debt and ownership interests before emerging from bankruptcy.
This has certainly been a lesson for the industry to not ignore pressure build ups in pipes and malfunctioning pressure relief valves. It could have been a short duration stoppage and repair rather than a catastrophic explosion causing major damage and an 8 month outage if they had heeded the warning signs that occurred days before the explosion.
