chr p, Charles is simply wrong -

If the Paris is a K8, it costs as much to manufacture as an Opteron does now. If its a K7, its a reasonable cost. Conclusion, its a K7.

Drop the L2 cache to 256K and then K8 is the same cost as K7. (At the same time they can drop a memory interface and a couple of HT ports, although there would be less gain from those moves and it may make sense to disable those instead.)

This isn't so hard to figure out: What is easier? Moving K7 to SOI and adding the memory controller & HT support for socket 754, or alternatively removing some cache & disabling 64-bits from K8?

It doesn't take a genius to see that K8 makes a much better choice for Paris. Am I missing something here?
