The year 2022 marked an increasing demand for licensing in electricity trading. According to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, during the past year 16 companies were licensed to exercise this activity, a high number compared to previous years. This is because, during 2021, 7 licenses were granted, while in 2020, only 2 such.
Even in previous years, the number of new licenses was significantly lower than in 2022.
At the same time, during the last year, 5 other entities renewed the licenses they had earlier. The increased interest in this activity came at a time when the electricity markets were unstable, while the Albanian Electricity Corporation, which managed sales and purchases, carried out frequent procedures in this direction.
According to official data, KESH bought energy at a higher price and sold it cheaper than the prices on the Hungarian Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, in addition to the criticisms of the experts, the opposition's accusations of profit sharing were also present.
According to the legislation in force, electricity trading is the process carried out by a legal entity that buys electricity, with the aim of reselling it inside or outside the system of the country where it operates. In total, the number of licensees in electricity trading is 116.
