I think what is spooking market makers is addition of new Board member, and management team. They were probably keen on shorting current management all day long, but now see new guys coming in with real backgrounds and operations, and that is making them cover big naked short positions they may have had on for years.

Key hires including:

Board Director
Chief Technology Officer
Head of Marketing
Retired police chief and support staff

....market makers realizing the old days are over and new team stepping in so time to cover to close out short positions.
