Yittrium-90 is a pure beta-emitter, with a decay energy of 0.94 MeV and the average penetration depth in human tissue is 2.4 mm. In the form of microspheres, it is suitable for selective arterial injection. The physical half-life of Y-90 is 64.2 h. The radiation exposure from a ‘radioactive’ patient who has been implanted with pure beta-emitters is very limited, unless the patient has an open wound that could make a possible leak from the body
