sgolds, touché on all points. I find it amazing that so few investors understand this. I made a post about that earlier:

AMD has explained very well in their presentations which applications they are targeting for AMD64 - to sum it up, AMD64 makes sense today in those areas where every last bit of performance counts. You don´t run that software on Duron equivalents, and software developers know that. Volume yes, any volume, no.

As for the critical mass argument, recent announcements have shown that AMD64 is here to stay - every major OS is ported to AMD64 (if it isn´t already), it´s an integral part of Longhorn at this point already. Maybe by the time Longhorn ships (2006), 64bit will have a real chance to become "standard". By that time, AMD will have to be 100% 64bit, which is their aim. Until then, enthusiasts and professionals in the gaming, workstation and server space will carry AMD64 forward. Again, these people don´t buy Durons. They can choose between A64 (mainstream), A64 FX (high-end desktop/workstation) and Opteron (server/workstation). On the other hand, the lack of AMD64 in the value space provides a clear and necessary differentiator for market segmentation, as described in the link above.

This strategy looks very sound to me, as I´ve stressed on several occasions.

From what I saw at today´s presentation, they´ve finally found the right strategy with the right focus. Now it´s up to them to execute that strategy. It will be interesting to watch.

Keith
