TI and RadioScape Deliver 30 GBP Eureka DAB Design
New Digital Radio Solution Shatters Cost Barriers Enabling OEMs to Quickly Deliver Inexpensive, Differentiated Products
HOUSTON (July 11, 2001) - Driving the design costs of digital radios to mass-market levels, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) and RadioScape Ltd. today delivered the industry's most cost effective reference design for Eureka-147 digital audio broadcast (DAB) receivers. Priced at about 30 Great Britain Pounds (GBP), the easy-to-build design enables manufacturers for the first time to offer next-generation radios at less than 100 GBP retail.

"This reference design will cost far less than existing solutions," said Mike Williams, senior analyst at Dataquest. "By offering the low-cost reference design, and by eliminating the need for hardware such as external memory and microcontrollers, TI and RadioScape will enable manufacturers (and thus end users) to make dramatic system cost savings. With this design, mass market radio is possible for the first time."

Based on the TMS320DRE200™ baseband announced in January, the reference design includes eight TI analog components and is enhanced by RadioScape's software-defined radio expertise. By offering a complete receiver system solution, TI and RadioScape have simplified the design, giving manufacturers flexibility and ease-of-build, and enabling the fast market delivery of differentiated, inexpensive products. The potential for these new feature-rich, hybrid radio products is unlimited, with mobile commerce, distance learning and MP3 recording expected to be among the first applications that consumers will be able to access.

The new design also consumes very low power, enabling manufacturers to offer receivers for the automotive, home-entertainment and portable radio markets. As the industry's first open programmable DSP-based software solution, the TI/RadioScape design makes it simple to differentiate products in these segments.

The reference and an evaluation board (EVM) are now available. For more information about getting started today, visit http://www.ti.com/sc/digitalradio.
