So was there anything remarkable about that hank that would make you want one

If the threads in the hank were the same filament count, then it would be difficult to tell the difference just by holding it. The difference would be in the mechanical properties.

Most silk threads (yarns) are made by twisting 8-12 individual silk filaments. So if the threads in the hank were made from 8-12 individual filaments, a normal person probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. But, say you did a mechanical tensile strength test, you'd be able to measure the difference in strength properties.

The way you'd be able to start "feeling" a difference with dragon/monster silk is if they started to change the amounts of filaments in a single thread. If dragon silk is 5x stronger than normal silk, then you could conceivably make a thread that is only made from 2 dragon filaments, but equal in strength to a normal silks 10 filament thread. The 2 filament dragon silk thread would be 1/5 the diameter so you would able to make a fabric that is much more shear, but equal in strength. That is when you will be able to feel the difference.

This might be one of the reasons for the hiring of Dorton. There is an art to determining the right filament structures and/or ratios of dragon silk combined with other performance materials in order to get the right combo for the application you need. It will be a constant task of testing out different yarn combinations considering the endless unique blends of our silk with other materials. I hope the testing never ends and KBLB is constantly approached by companies who want to integrate our fibers.

Also, machine tooling for new types of threads can be a lengthy process. There probably isn't too much expertise in twisting a 2 filament thread of normal silk. The resulting thread would be too fragile for most applications. But that's not true for dragon silk. This is why the successful pilot production at the 3rd party contractor was so important during the first 6 months of 2022. KBLB made them prove that they could produce with their machines before signing the contract.
