How do we know they didn't acquire shares indirectly through the open market (say some relative in South Africa or some shell corporation bought on their behalf). It only traded in the trips for years before it took off, plenty of time to acquire discounted shares.

Not saying that this is fact, but it is very much possible. They could have frontloaded billions of shares while they prepared and worked on their story. Remember they have been talking about a LOI for years.

A long con is much harder to identify.
