I don't think it would be a great stretch to believe that this corruption would include massive kick backs and perks to make sure that one (or two) specific product stays on top. Even if that means a better product surfaces that would be far more effective.
This "little guy" is stuck behind the 8-ball, and at their mercy. The FDA could have given them a hand a long time ago, but that didn't happen. They could have seen the data as effective, especially compared to the other products that they rushed through and force fed to the people, and put it to the forefront of further testing to make sure it got to the public faster. I still don't understand how this has existed for as long as it has, but it was still being as heavily scrutinized as it has been.
I grow more and more cynical each day that the individuals that are allowed to make decisions that heavily impact the masses of Americans (and people worldwide) are in ANY WAY interested in doing what is best for the people, when they themselves stand to benefit so greatly by ignoring that duty.
