The reason the gold standard didn’t work last time, is because it’s too easy for other countries to manipulate the value of gold and therefore manipulate your currency.

We quietly abandoned the gold standard and made it illegal for Americans to own bullion, and then we bought up all the Mexican gold pesos with $20 paper bills, by the time the Mexicans and the Chinese figured it all out it was too late and we had stripped 90% of their precious metals from their countries.

The only thing worse than our central bank inflating and manipulating our currency is to have a foreign central bank doing it to us.
