I recall he used the word “antiquated” to describe currently available technology, but only referenced a mag.

If he was referring to the magnetometer as 'antiquated', that speaks volumes as to his naiveness (stupidity). He obviously knows nothing about treasure hunting or the applied remote sensing technology successfully used in shipwreck exploration and discovery.

Perhaps it's best he stays in the toy invention business.
