first for original material written by an unknown artist from whom they might inveigle
publishing rights as a condition of recording opportunities that might lead to
fame and fortune, down the road.

She didn't write her own songs, but instead chose to cover standards.
She was determined to do it "her way," which meant control of her career
that w/o compromises, led to very little tangible success.
