"The geopolitical awakening of the EU", Rama: I don't see Europe changing

Although his criticisms of Europe are now more moderate after the opening of negotiations, Edi Rama continues to express them in every international format where he is invited to speak. He did the same in the Alpbach European forum, which is taking place in Austria and is organized by the well-known Politiko portal.

Asked about his point of view on the Geopolitical Awakening of the EU, especially after the Russian intervention in Ukraine, the Albanian Prime Minister does not have the highest ratings for the way the union is reacting and thinks differently about the USA.

"The way I understand things is that this war is challenging the very foundations of our societies on the western side and in the end, I think the real issue is not how much the war wakes you up because the bombs usually wake you up, you can't sleep , but how resistant can the West be?

I don't see Europe changing in any way. OK, more solidarity, more sense of community, more meetings, but Europe is good for more meetings, no problem there. The point is how Europe itself is changing, and it doesn't seem to be changing at all. It's more of a kind of inertia between a war where on one side are the Russians, on the other side is Ukraine and the Americans who are giving a lot of support, and Europe is joining this support as much as any country can, but it's not something such as Europe, here there are different countries with a common attitude".

Rama even thinks that the concrete help of what he qualifies as third factors in the Balkans has been even greater than the EU itself in times of crisis such as the pandemic.

"But when we discuss the strategy, we talk about third actors, who should not be allowed to enter the Western Balkans, but when it comes to a matter of life and death, it is China that saves many lives in the Western Balkans, it is Russia and it is Turkey . Without the president of Turkey, we would not have had the vaccines".

He sees Kosovo as a typical example where the EU, contrary to what it says, acts by holding hostage its citizens who are the only ones who cannot move freely in the Schengen area.

"While there has been liberalization of visas for tens of millions of people - for example, Ukraine, Georgia - less than 2 million people are being held hostage there in the heart of Europe, why? On the other hand, there are tensions in Mitrovica and not in Mitrovica. When it comes to supporting the success of dialogue, no one thinks "Give these people the freedom to move" and say "You are free to move already", but at the same time, let there be more constructive dialogue.

That's why Edi Rama continues to see as a very utilitarian solution to change the EU's approach to the Balkan region the French President's proposal for a European political community where non-EU countries sit at the table of political discussions in addition to the EU countries.
