Samsung Electronics, Microsoft Team Up
on Server

BERLIN (Reuters) - South Korea (news - web sites)'s Samsung
Electronics (05930.KS) will launch a home network server in
cooperation with U.S-based software group Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT -
news), sources close to the companies said on Saturday.

The home server, which will be able to connect computers, consumers
electronics and home appliances, will be presented at the annual
Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, according to the sources.

It will work on Microsoft's new Windows XP (news - web sites) operating system which will be
launched in October.

The server, which will look like any HiFi-player, will be priced like an average personal computer, and
will be simple to use. Home network servers have been anticipated for some time, but electronic
manufacturers have struggled with the user-friendliness.

Eventually it will help consumers to operate their video recorder from work, or turn on the lights and
watch their home on an Internet camera while on vacation.

Samsung's server can connect to other devices through a wide range of wired and wireless standards,
such as Ethernet, Firewire, Bluetooth and Wireless LAN.

The sources spoke at the fringes of the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA), Europe's largest consumer
electronics show held every two years.
