Bar, Concerning United Technologies, for years I tried to get my dad to swap out of his GE stock in favor of UTX. He had worked at GE as an engineer in their space division, but UTX was a better performing stock, and I always liked the diversification of their businesses, with Otis and Carrier. But unfortunately my dad stuck with GE.

GE's big move into financial services under Jack Welch seemed like a logical move at the time, but ultimately blew up during the 2008/09 financial crisis, and the company never really recovered. I remember Buffett came to the rescue during that period, but later when he bailed on his GE position (I think he got out in the low 30s), the stock dropped in half. After that I started following Buffett's buy/sell decisions more closely :o)
