EMF As a Cause of Metal Implant Failure in Spinal Fusion

When two metals are in the same area, they can generate electric currents. The electric current has a biologic effect on the bone. Bone-building cells called osteoblasts are destroyed when exposed to this electromagnetic field (EMF).

This is the first study to show that metal implants can generate electric and electromagnetic energy. The effect on bone leads to bone loss and implant failure. The next step is to find out how this kind of EMF affects osteoblasts and stop it from altering bone growth.

Sadly this study doesnt even factor in external EMF and how it plays into metal implant failure. Nice to see a study outside of dental confirming EMF can induce metal implant failure. If internal EMF cause this degree of problems, imagine what external is doing!
Coating metal implants with Si3N4 can reduce electrical conductivity and thus corrosion of metal implants extensively. It is not 100% however. Thus some metal ions will inevitably get into the bloodstream. A switch to all ceramic implants whenever possible will prevent metal corrosion and thus EMF based implant failure.
