Study, Albania net exporter of energy in the 2030 scenario
August 5, 2022

A study conducted by two companies on behalf of the Secretariat of the Energy Community on the flexibility and decarbonization of economies concludes that Albania in the base scenario in 2030 will be a net exporter of energy.

"In the 2030 baseline scenario, Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania are net exporters (due to a production surplus), while all other contracting parties are net importers. By 2040, most countries will increase their import needs compared to 2030.

"Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina become net importers due to an ambitious shift away from coal and disproportionate deployment of renewables to offset this shortfall (under scenario assumptions). Albania is the only Contracting Party as a net exporter in all scenarios. Looking only at the horizon of 2040, net imports are being reduced from the baseline scenario to the ambitious scenario," the study says.

Focusing only on Albania, this document underlines that the production of hydropower plants in Albania may represent 80% of the domestic production in 2040.

According to the ambitious scenario that the study cites, the country has a supply surplus that allows it to offer daily and weekly flexibility to its neighbors (Figure 82). Albania's hydropower "fleet" becomes one of the main providers of flexibility for the entire Western Balkan region (6 countries).

The study drawn up by companies on behalf of the Secretariat comes in terms of determining the need and the role of flexibility opportunities to support decarbonization in the Energy Community (EnC) towards 2040.

This report focuses on the use of current flexibility and solutions. Second, it focuses on analyzing future flexibility needs as well as optimal portfolios and costs in choosing the appropriate flexibility considering scenarios regarding variable renewable energy sources (vRES), coal distribution and capacity levels. of communication between countries./N.Maho
