Anything outside the inside quote is only obligated to buy or sell the first 1,000 shares...among market makers ( which I was) it's called simply "Being hit"

Then the market maker has 30 seconds to keep his bid or ask there or move it

If he keeps it there...they will be obligated to buy or sell another 1,000 shares
