Very few researchers who believe there's a relationship between viruses or other pathogens and Alzheimer's get any funding whatsoever.

Those that do get funds, get very little preventing them from making rapid progress or getting a definitive answer one way or the other.

And the very small number that make some exceptionally worthwhile progress have a near impossible task in getting the editors of the most respected medical journals to publish their results.
