It's good to know that MMs play no part in a stock market, because the stock market is an actual market where sellers and buyers trade stocks without a hint of any "market making" efforts-- there it is right in the name "Market Maker" (who'd a thunk eh?). That's not to say one's online broker doesn't make a commission. It just means that listed stocks don't need to have market makers selling short an unlisted stock so as to facilitate an orderly market in an otherwise thin field of participants. Market Makers, even in pennystocks, don't make any money shorting the stocks either. Again the market makers facilitates these trades and zeros their accounts monthly so as not to trigger a FTD notice.
