Netflix has a documentary called "Dopesick" that I watched after having passed over it several times.

It's largely focused on Purdue pharma's coercing/bribing the FDA to say Oxycontin is not addictive.

Actor Michael Keaton plays the role of a rural MD in the Appalachian region who believed the FDA approved OXY reference sheet and thought he was helping patients to manage pain without risking addiction.

I'm not saying the FDA is corrupt through and through but apparently there are opportunities for pharmas with deep pockets to get their way. Fortunately the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) was persistent in going after the Sackler family and Purdue pharma.
