SK hynix looks forward to growing memory demand in the server segment and a recovery in the consumer sector in the second half of the year

South Korean company SK hynix released quarterly earnings this week, announcing a record $2.3 billion net profit since 2018, more than doubling year-on-year. Revenue in general grew by 43% to $9.7 billion. This year, the locomotive of demand for memory will be the server segment, according to SK hynix, and smartphones and PCs will be sold sluggishly in the first half of the year.

What the company does not doubt is the high demand for memory from the server segment. This year, demand dynamics will resemble 2018, according to representatives of SK hynix, when there was a boom in cloud technologies. According to the company’s forecasts, shipments of solid-state memory of this brand will grow by 30% this year, and shipments of RAM will increase by 18-19%. In the consumer sector, SK hynix executives expect demand for memory for smartphones and PCs to grow only in the second half of the year. The intensity of the recovery of this market will largely depend on the duration of lockdowns in China

SK hynix currently suffers from a shortage of technological equipment, but even in such conditions it is going to increase memory production by increasing the level of product yield. From the point of view of financial indicators, the priority for the company is to maintain the level of profitability. Since such beliefs are shared by other market participants, this should help reduce price fluctuations in memory chips.
