BLOG LEGALIndigenous Communities Warn Of Gas Pipeline Construction In Interoceanic Corridor
Published1 day ago

OAXACA, Oax. (apro).- The Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Zone of the Isthmus (Ucizoni) denounced that national sovereignty is at risk because the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) promotes the construction of a gas pipeline as part of the Interoceanic Corridor with two US companies without consulting the native peoples.

The leader of the Ucizoni, Carlos Beas Torres, said that the project is being developed by the company Temura and the financing has been agreed with the North American companies Mirage Energy and Northern Hemisphere Logistics.

The project contemplates the construction of the gas pipeline to transport natural gas from the port of Tuxpan, in the north of Veracruz to Minatitlán and from there cross the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to reach the port of Salina Cruz in Oaxaca.

To this end, Mirage Energy and Northern Hemisphere Logistics are expected to invest around $800 million.

However, this megaproject has not been consulted with the indigenous peoples of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, nor does it have the Environmental Impact Statement.

Beas Torres stressed that the pipeline is part of the Interoceanic Corridor megaproject and is an updated version of the Plan Puebla Panama project promoted at the time by former President Vicente Fox.

And the gas pipeline project that is intended to be built with U.S. companies from the port of Salina Cruz to Guatemala is still missing, he concluded.
