ECIDA signs off on tax breaks for Worksport project in West Seneca

The Erie County Industrial Development Agency has signed off on tax breaks for a tonneau-cover manufacturer that's shifting manufacturing from China to West Seneca.

William Hart, general counsel for Worksport Ltd. (NASDAQ:WKSP), told the ECIDA directors that proximity to the border is one reason the company is shifting manufacturing from Yantian, China, to the former Certo Brothers warehouse at 2500 North America Drive.

“We didn’t know of any other city capable of doing that except Buffalo,” Hart said at the April 27 meeting. “We are moving our manufacturing from China to the U.S.; it is as simple as that. There are too many uncertainties overseas. We are bringing this work back home.”

The ECIDA directors approved $103,562 in tax breaks for Worksport’s $15 million investment in West Seneca. The 222,000-square-foot building has been vacant since Certo Brothers left in 2019. Worksport will pay $8.125 million for the building.

Beth O’Keefe, ECIDA vice president of operations, said Worksport will use about 60% of the building for manufacturing. The other 40% for future expansion.

Worksport makes tonneau covers for truck beds. The cover protects truck beds from weather and secures whatever is stored in the bed.

Hart said Worksport also will shift some work currently done at the company’s headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario. Worksport will hire 16 workers initially.
