Why payments for forest restoration?

"...Halting, preventing or reversing ecosystem degradation is no easy task. Even understanding the proximate and underlying drivers of degradation is a huge challenge. Put simply, if local communities, governments, private companies, etc. see there are clear economic advantages to ecosystem stewardship they are more likely to conserve or restore rather than degrade ecosystems.

There are a range of payment mechanisms to incentivize ecosystem stewardship, such as payment for ecosystem services, carbon offsets, sustainability premiums to smallholder farmers, and donor funded programs.
