The Book of Nehemiah – Key Take-Away’s from #DailyBibleReading

Nehemiah 1:

• Although Nehemiah was born in Babylon, as a Jew he knew that his home was in Jerusalem. Likewise, as a child of God – saved by grace – our home is in heaven.
• When we experience or hear of calamities, our first action should be to fall upon our face before the Lord in prayer and fasting.
• Nehemiah’s heart was troubled by what he heard had befallen Jerusalem. He repented before God and started to pray and fast for God’s favor to return to his people.
• What breaks our hearts to the point that we mimic Nehemiah’s actions to intercede on behalf of others?

Nehemiah 2:

• God will place burdens on our hearts to do something – to take action – and many times the action will seem to be an impossible task. These types of tasks are humanly impossible, but by God’s power we can accomplish them – and God will receive the glory and praise, because all will know that it was not possible by mere human strength, knowledge or willpower.
• Prayer is the key to understanding what God desires of us. Prayer is also the key to receiving God’s power, strength, and stamina to fulfill His desires in and through us.
• Although God prepares and equips us for His good works, we must be on the alert for our enemy – Satan – to come against us in an attempt to stop our God-desired endeavors. The greater the effort from us – the greater the resistance from the evil one.

Nehemiah 3:

• God uses the seemingly unskilled to accomplish His goals and purpose. Those that are willing to hear and obey God’s call to action will be successful. God equips those that He calls.

Nehemiah 4:

• As a follower of Christ, we will be mocked and ridiculed at times – even by our own family – expect it, but go to God with it – not them. Do not allow ridicule to stop you from doing what God has instructed you to do.
• The more we obey God, the more mockery and ridicule we should expect.
• By prayer and fasting, we gain the strength to stand strong against the evil one, and, are able to intercede on behalf of others that are carrying out God’s plans and desires.

Nehemiah 5:

• The people of Jerusalem were reprimanded for their ungodly treatment of their own countrymen. Acknowledging their guilt, they repented and changed their ways.
• Our attitude should be one of pleasing God by being obedient to His command of loving others (to show compassion and mercy to one another).

Nehemiah 6:

• As we go about God’s will for our life, many will attempt to distract us, and even prevent us from being effective for the kingdom of God.
• As we draw nearer to the Lord, He will give to us godly wisdom and discernment to guide us through our walk of life on earth.
• Sometimes, the evil one uses members of our own family and extended family to come against us in an attempt to draw us away from God.

Nehemiah 7:

• As a child of God, we are not to become lazy in our obedience to pursue and do the works that the Lord has for us. As one task nears completion – another one will present itself.
• As children of God, we are fully aware that this earth is not our eternal home. We need to be living our earthly life with our eternal destination always on our hearts and minds.

Nehemiah 8:

• The Word of God – the Gospel – should penetrate our hearts to the point that we are sorrowful for our sinful life.
• Once we accept God’s gift of salvation, then we can be joyful by turning away from our sinful lifestyles.
• The next step is to study – and obey – the Word in order to mature in our relationship with the Lord.

Nehemiah 9:

• When God’s Word truly permeates to our heart, mind and soul we will change our lifestyle to a lifestyle that pleases God.
• Although the children of Israel turned away from God on many occasions – God still had a compassionate heart for them.
• As children of God, we are in the world – but not of the world. We must be careful to not allow our interaction with the world to drag us back into a sinful lifestyle.

Nehemiah 10:

• Once the people of Israel realized that they were not following God’s instructions, they repented, and joyfully started to follow God’s commands for their lives.
• As children of God, we are not to marry unbelievers – for that type of relationship will tend to draw us away from God and His purpose for our life.
• Christian leadership is responsible for leading by example – to serve the Lord in spirit and in truth according to God’s will and purpose.

Nehemiah 11:

• As obedient disciples of Christ, the Lord determines our going, coming and staying. It’s all in accordance to His will, glory and kingdom-building.
• Sometimes the Lord will uproot us and have us start a new life in another location – as He did with Abraham and those that repopulated Jerusalem after Nehemiah oversaw the rebuilding of the city.

Nehemiah 12:

• The closer we grow in our relationship with the Lord, the more we will desire to please Him through our obedience to Him. As this relationship progresses, the Lord will show to us our “true calling” as His disciple. This “true calling” may involve a physical action (e.g., change in location or job); we are to follow His directions wherever it takes us.

Nehemiah 13:

• God warns against intermingling with the unbelievers of the world. We are to live in the world – but apart from the world – specifically in the area of relationships.
• God is Holy – and as children of God through Christ Jesus, we are to live holy lives.
