My understanding was that back in the day black people didn't consider themselves to be mountain goats either. Most of the "slavin' business" was done where the civilized people dwelt in the valleys and plains, where the Sheriff & his kids didn't have to worry about uppity black folks causing an inconvenience, ya know..
