That's the point. If we have to guess about things that should have been mentioned in the story, then that story that has holes in it, by definition.

Not ruin his life? So far, so good, but there's no guarantee he'll come back alive or without major injury from a war zone.

If he fought in Afghanistan and Iraq and now finds himself needing to fight in Ukraine, I'd describe that as a pretty major "war jones." He can't adjust to a non-war life.

Is it heroic to abandon your family and responsibilities to pursue your dream and maybe never come back?
