That's the point. If we have to guess about things that should have been mentioned in the story, then that story that has holes in it, by definition.

If he fought in Afghanistan and Iraq and now finds himself needing to fight in Ukraine, I'd describe that as a pretty major "war jones." He can't adjust to a non-war life.
