but I am fairly certain the salinity of the brine solution has to be controlled and the salinity of saltwater can vary widely from one region to another.
The flipside to that is that most offshore units, whether fixed or mobile, have the ability to generate freshwater from the seawater using Heat or through Reverse Osmosis, so supply of fresh water for the equipment should not be an issue.
