What happens if a stock is delisted?

This can be voluntary,
when the company chooses to do so
for strategic or financial reasons,
or involuntary,
when the exchange forces the company to delist.

Companies may want to delist
for a number of other reasons:

Make short-term profits.

If a stock trades below its intrinsic value,
the company may repurchase its own shares
to profit over the short-term
before delisting.

This can also produce rewards
for current shareholders,
giving them considerable returns

What happens to shares when a company gets delisted?

Shares don’t disappear after a stock delisting,
but this does change how and where
shareholders can sell or buy them.

Additionally,
the share price may or may not be affected
by a stock delisting.

Traders can potentially profit
from voluntary and involuntary delistings.

If a company delists voluntarily,
its share price can increase
depending on the reasons for the privatisation.

In this case,
a trader can open a position to ‘buy’ (go long)
if they think the share price will increase.

Does it make sense to wait for firm to relist or sell shares?

First things first

For the uninitiated,
delisting is a procedure
via which a companys shares are removed
from the stock exchange.

As a result,
the trading in the companys shares
is stopped on that stock exchange.

There are two circumstances
under which a company goes for delisting.

First, when a company fails to comply
with various requirements of the stock exchange.
As a measure of punishment then
the companys shares can be removed
from the SE.

Even post the delisting offer closing,
the window for delisting is usually open
for another six months.

This allows remaining shareholders
to tender securities at the same price.
Post the six-month period,
the investors can get in touch
with the companies and normally
the companies which have undergone delisting
could be willing to acquire the shares,
says Shrikant Shetty,
V-P and head of equity advisory at Unicon Wealth.

While you can still sell your shares
when a company trades over the counter,
the bid/ask spreads may be relatively wide,
meaning that buyers willing
to pay your desired price are scarce.

Although some brokerages restrict such OTC transactions,
you generally can sell a delisted stock
just as you would a stock that trades on an exchange.

A delisted stock
can continue to trade over the counter for years
