Geologists know that abundant azurite is often found in the rocks above deposits of copper ore. That enables them to use azurite as an indicator mineral in the search for subsurface copper deposits. The presence of abundant azurite indicates the possibility of finding some form of copper ore below or nearby.

Malachite is generally found together with blue Azurite, and sometimes the two may occur admixed or banded together, forming what is commonly known in the gem and mineral trade as “Azure-Malachite.”

Finding both is commonly a very strong indicator that there’s copper below!
