Can someone explain how a tiny company like KBLB can get the jump on huge companies like J and J and others in building elaborate proteins that are covered by these announced patents? Why could KBLB do this work and the other huge companies could not for some reason?

Thats because, if you've spent anytime following biotech and pharma the last 20 years, you'll notice that these large companies hardly ever do grassroots bootstrapping science anymore. They almost solely acquire small firms after they have derisked their products/drugs. A lot of times this happens when a small company becomes worth $500 mil to $2 billion. That seems to be the sweet spot lately. Or if a small company moves a drug from preclinical to phase I or II.

Thats when the big companies swoop in.

If Kraig Labs got bought out tomorrow by J&J for $2billion, then in 10 years, no would ever know who KBLB was. Everyone would just assume J&J created recombinant spider silk.

For example, lots of people in oncology are talking about Gileads CAR-T cancer treatment called Yescarta. Hardly anyone is acknowledging anymore that it was actually a company called Kite that developed it but Gilead bought them for $12 billion. And that was only a few years ago. This happens all the time now in biotech. It's actually the norm.
