The only shares that seriously matter when it comes to traded stock supply/demand are "outstanding stock"(OS) or "issued" (or often called "the float" shares). Authorized shares (AS) are those at a company's disposition that it CAN or MIGHT put into circulation IF, IF needed. For example, a company can convert AS to OS to retain majority ownership if it is fighting a hostile takeover (I have seen this twice before). As this article describes, a company might have 100 million shares, but decide to never put more than 10 million in the float (available for trading). Bottom line: the critical number is the one for outstanding/issued/float shares!! The AS - no matter what the number - is far, far less important!
